Dr. Murray was born in Scotland and received his medical degree from the University of Glasgow, Scotland. He interned at Victoria Hospital, London, ON and then completed a further year of post-graduate training at the University of Michigan, USA, where he was awarded an MS in Physiology. This was followed by three more years of graduate research in Biochemistry at the University of Toronto, Canada, culminating in him being awarded a PhD degree. Dr. Murray had a distinguished teaching and research career at the University during which he received Faculty and Alumni awards for teaching, trained more than a dozen graduate students, published over fifty scientific peer-reviewed papers, authored multiple textbook articles, including various chapters in a number of books, and has been the Senior Editor of the last eight editions of “Harper’s Biochemistry.”
Dr Murray has engaged in research on glycobiology (the study of how sugars affect the body) and in various aspects of liver function. At present, his major interests are in how Biochemistry and Nutrition influence health and disease, and also in medical education.
